Scale numbers only make sense next to real measurements. Compare 1/6, 1/4, and 1/7 statues, check shelf fit before you buy, and match scale to the space you actually have.
Quick answer
Pick 1/7 if shelf space is tight or you want several characters on one shelf. Pick 1/6 if you want a larger presence without giving up a standard display cabinet. Pick 1/4 only when you have measured depth and height for a dedicated spot, because it dominates a shelf and shipping costs more.
What scale numbers actually tell you
Scale is a ratio to a real-world reference, not a fixed size. A 1/6 statue is roughly one-sixth the size of the real person or object it depicts, so a 1.75 m character becomes about 29 cm tall before the base. A 1/4 statue of the same character is about 44 cm before the base. That difference is why two statues can share a scale label and still sit at different heights: bases, poses, and capes all add centimeters.
- 1/7: often 22-28 cm before the base; the most common anime figure scale.
- 1/6: often 28-32 cm before the base; a step up in presence, still cabinet-friendly.
- 1/4: often 40-50 cm before the base; needs its own shelf or a low surface.
- Always add 5-10 cm for the base and any raised weapon or hair.
How to check shelf fit before you order
Measure the inside of your shelf, not the outside. Cabinet frames, glass doors, and shelf lips can steal 2-4 cm from the usable height and depth. Then add the statue's listed height plus a base allowance of at least 5 cm, and check depth against the widest point of the pose, not the footprint.
- Height: shelf opening minus 5 cm should be greater than the statue height.
- Depth: measure the deepest point of the pose, including a cape or outstretched arm.
- Weight: resin statues are heavy; check the shelf's load rating before placing a 1/4 piece.
- Viewing distance: a 1/4 statue reads well from 1.5-2 m away, so a narrow hallway rarely suits it.
Why shipping and handling change the scale decision
Large scales cost more to ship and are harder to pack safely. Many resin statues are quoted for shipping only after the item reaches the logistics center, so the final cost is not known at checkout. That makes scale a budget decision as much as a display decision: a 1/4 statue can add a significant shipping charge on top of the catalog price, while a 1/7 figure usually ships in a smaller, cheaper box.
- Ask for a shipping quote before committing to a large piece.
- Keep the original packaging if you may move or resell the statue.
- Pre-order timelines vary by brand and production run; plan storage space for the box too.
Mixing scales without making the shelf look wrong
You can mix scales if you group by character or theme rather than by scale. Put the largest piece at the back or on a riser, and keep smaller figures in front so nothing is hidden. If you want a uniform lineup, stay within one scale band such as 1/7 and 1/6, and avoid placing a 1/4 next to a 1/7 unless the size difference is intentional.
- Use risers to create height steps instead of crowding figures.
- Reserve the top shelf for the tallest statue so it does not block light.
- Keep bases aligned to the shelf edge for a cleaner sightline.
Decision rules for choosing a scale
- If your shelf opening is under 35 cm: Choose 1/7 or a compact 1/6 figure and check the base height. A 1/4 statue will not fit without removing a shelf. Measure first, then buy.
- If you want one centerpiece for a living room: Choose 1/4 or a large GK statue in the 35-45 cm range, and place it on a low, stable surface away from walkways. Confirm the shipping quote before ordering.
- If you collect many characters from one series: Stay with 1/7 or 1/6 so the lineup reads as a set. Mixing a 1/4 into a 1/7 row makes the smaller pieces look like accessories. Pick one scale band and stay in it.
- If you are unsure about the final size: Use the listed dimensions plus 5-10 cm for the base, and compare that number to your shelf opening. If the catalog does not list dimensions, treat that as a missing fact and ask before buying. No dimensions means no confident purchase.
Catalog examples and what their sizes mean
- [Warehouse in Stock] Chao She Studio - Statue - Howl's Moving Castle Sophie and Howl Skywalk: Chao She Studio Howl's Moving Castle Sophie and Howl Skywalk GK statue, dimensions H:37 cm W:22 cm D:25 cm, ready to ship from the logistics center in 30-40 days. At 37 cm tall and 25 cm deep, this piece needs a shelf opening of at least 42 cm and a depth of about 30 cm, so it suits a dedicated display shelf rather than a crowded bookshelf.
- [Pre-Order] Yumi Figure - Statue - Mairo series Rosalina: Yumi Figure Mairo series Rosalina GK statue, pre-order with 2026 Q4 estimated shipping; estimated air shipping to the United States is $55-71.5 USD. If you are comparing this to a larger statue, budget the shipping quote as part of the total cost and confirm the release window before you clear shelf space.
- [Pre-Order] HotToys - Action Figure - Spider-Man: Brand New Day Spider-Man 1/6th scale Collectible Figure MMS892 MMS893 (Licensed): HotToys Spider-Man: Brand New Day 1/6th scale collectible figure, approximately 28.5 cm tall, licensed, pre-order for 2027 Q3-Q4. This is a clear example of a 1/6 scale figure that stays under 30 cm, so it fits standard cabinets where a 1/4 statue would not.
